Dead heat calculator: settle a shared finish correctly

When two or more runners cannot be separated, the bet is settled on a reduced stake. Part of your money is paid at the full price and the rest is treated as a loser, which is not the same as being paid half the odds.

How a dead heat is settled

The rule divides your stake by the number of runners sharing the position, pays that portion at the full price, and settles the rest as a loser. Two horses dead-heating for a win means half your stake is paid at the full odds and half is lost.

A £20 bet at 4/1 in a two-way dead heat therefore returns £50: £10 settled at 4/1 gives £50, and the other £10 is gone. The profit is £30 rather than the £80 a clean win would have produced.

This is genuinely different from being paid at half the odds, which would return £60 from the full £20 stake. The distinction matters more as prices lengthen, and it is the single most common misunderstanding about dead heat settlement.

Dead heats in each way and place markets

Place markets complicate things, because more than one position may be available to the runners sharing it. If three horses dead-heat for two remaining places, two thirds of your stake is settled as a winner and one third as a loser.

The general rule is that the fraction settled as a winner equals the number of positions available divided by the number of runners sharing them. The calculator asks for both figures for this reason.

On an each way bet the two halves are settled independently. A horse dead-heating for the win has its win half reduced, while the place half is usually unaffected because the places are not contested in the same way.

Dead heats are far more common than most people assume, and not only in photo finishes. They occur regularly in golf outright and top-finish markets, in first goalscorer betting when goals are credited jointly, and in any market where several selections can share a position. Anywhere a market pays a fixed number of positions and more runners than that finish level, the same stake-reduction rule applies.

The reason bookmakers settle this way rather than paying everyone in full is straightforward: paying two winners at the full price on a market priced for one would guarantee a loss on the book. Dividing the stake keeps the payout consistent with the price that was offered. It feels harsh at the counter, but it is arithmetic rather than sharp practice, and it is set out in the rules of every firm.

One thing genuinely worth checking is whether your bookmaker applies the reduction to the stake or to the odds, because a minority of firms describe it the second way. The two produce different returns, and the difference grows with the price.
